We at Our Culture Brewing and Creature Comforts Brewing Company are thrilled to announce the launch of Brew For One: Fonio Lager. This special collaboration’s proceeds will benefit the Michael James Jackson Foundation (MJF), an organization dedicated to supporting Black, Indigenous, and people of color in the brewing and distilling industries. 

The Story Behind Brew For One Fonio Lager 

Brew For One Fonio Lager isn’t just a beer—it’s a celebration of culture, sustainability, and ingenuity. At the heart of this year’s release is fonio, an ancient West African grain that has been cultivated for over 5,000 years. Revered for its drought-resistant and nutrient-rich properties, fonio supports sustainable agriculture and empowers farmers in West Africa. Its use in brewing adds a soft, rounded mouthfeel and delicate fruit-forward aromas, creating a unique and flavorful lager. 

“Fonio Lager is more than a beer; it’s a celebration of heritage and ingenuity,” said Garrett Oliver, Founder of MJF. “With every sip, consumers are supporting community, education, and sustainability.”

About Brew For One 

The Brew For One initiative was established by Creature Comforts in 2017 to support a new beneficiary each year, meeting their specific needs. “Brew For One is Creature Comforts’ opportunity to do for one person what we wish we could do for everyone,” said Co-Founder & CEO Adam Beauchamp. For 2025, we’ve partnered with MJF, continuing their mission to make a positive impact on the brewing community. 

MJF honors the legacy of Michael James Jackson, a pioneering beer and whiskey writer. The foundation provides scholarships and educational opportunities to underrepresented groups, empowering them to become the next generation of leaders in brewing.

Sourcing sweet potatoes from a local farm in Athens, we aimed to infuse our beer with the flavors of the season. By adding a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla we achieved a delicate balance of spice and sweetness that evokes memories of cozy evenings by the fireplace. Each sip is a warm embrace, a reminder of the comfort of home. This collaboration goes beyond the creation of a delicious beer. It represents a shared vision between Our Culture and Creature Comforts – a vision of inclusivity and opportunity.  

Through the residency program, we are providing a platform for aspiring brewers from diverse backgrounds to break into the industry. By joining forces, we are not only brewing exceptional beer, but also cultivating a pathway for success for underrepresented voices in the beer community. Diversifying the beer industry is at the core of our mission. We believe that everyone, regardless of their race or gender, should have the opportunity to leave their mark in the world of brewing. Our collaboration with Creature Comforts is a step towards making this vision a reality. By introducing an influx of people of color and all genders to the business, we hope to redefine the landscape of the beer industry and celebrate the richness of diversity.  

Nov. 1st marks a significant milestone for us as we release our collaboration beer to the world. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Creature Comforts team for their unwavering support, expertise, and commitment to our shared vision. Together, we aim to inspire and empower other brewers, no matter where they are on their entrepreneurial journey, to follow their dreams and break down the barriers that have traditionally hindered diversity in the industry.  

Our sweet potato amber ale, ‘Seeds Take Up the Soil’ is more than just a beer – it’s a symbol of unity, comfort, and change. Through our collaboration with Creature Comforts, we have not only crafted a delicious brew but also paved the way for a more diverse and inclusive beer industry.
